About

Most sunscreen burns. You know the feeling: that chemical sting hitting your eyes, turning a beach day into a misery session. The culprit is usually avobenzone, a common UV filter that breaks down and gets nasty when it heats up or mixes with sweat. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer and Coppertone Sport are repeat offenders here.

Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide don't sting because they sit on top of your skin instead of soaking in. Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen makes a sensitive formula that works without the chemical burn. So does Thinkbaby, which was designed for kids but works just fine for adults who want to keep their eyes functional. Both feel thicker going on, but that's the trade for not spending your day crying.

The real winner is La Roche-Posay Anthelios, specifically their mineral ultra-light formula. French pharmacy brands figured this out years ago. It goes on clean, stays put during rides along the San Diego coast, and doesn't migrate into your eyes when you're sweating through a climb up Torrey Pines. Costs more than drugstore options but less than emergency eye drops.

You keep coming back to products that solve actual problems without creating new ones. Good sunscreen protects without punishment. Everything else is just expensive regret in a tube."

Fun fact

Avobenzone becomes acidic when exposed to UV light, which is why your sunscreen literally burns more the longer you stay in the sun.
